The Rotary Club of Cebu in cooperation with the University of Southern Philippines has identified an impoverished community of about sixty households along a gully at the foot of the posh Beverly Hills Subdivision in Cebu City as beneficiary of an outreach program. The houses are of makeshift type clinging to the steep inclines of the bank. Though technically a forestal area, its habitation has been tolerated by the government for these landless city dwellers.
The project aims at improving the livelihood and health of the community. The project is a recipient of funds from the RC Sunset Aloha and the Rotary Club of Cebu under the Matching Grant Program. in the amount of $13,000.
The project has conducted training in Food Processing, Hotel Housekeeping, Carpentry and Electrical Maintenance and other vocational skills with the view of helping the participants obtain gainful employment. As part of addressing the health concern of the community, the project built a five-unit communal sanitary toilet facility.
With the assistance of social workers from the University of the Southern Philippines, a multi-purpose cooperative is being organized which will eventually administer the collaborative efforts of the community and make it autonomous in undertaking various social and economic programs.
